There are presently no plans to re-introduce the Red Flag Law or anything similar to it.

The Red Flag Law or correctly termed the ‘Locomotives on Highways Act’, was introduced in 1865. It required that any ‘road locomotive’ was preceded by a person on foot at a distance of not less than 60 yards carrying a red flag that should be constantly displayed.

A ‘road locomotive’ was not to exceed a speed of 4mph on open roads and 2mph in towns. The Act was repealed in 1896 as the internal combustion engine had come into its infancy.
